6 Places to Hear Live Music in Chicago

Chicago is known for its vibrant live music scene during the summertime, and there are many places to enjoy the sounds of the city throughout its various neighborhoods. During the summer you can find large music festivals, free concerts, local artists, and more at every corner. No matter what type of music genre you prefer, there is a musician waiting to share their talent with you in Chicago at one of these local-favorite venues.

Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park

Each summer, locals and tourists alike await the return of the summer concert music series. This free opportunity to hear music every Monday and Thursday in Millenium Park is a popular way to pass the summer while taking in gorgeous sounds. From jazz bands to orchestras to DJs, the Pritzker Pavilion features both established and emerging artists all summer long. The shows start at 5:30 pm as you sit in the shadows of the skyscrapers and marvel at the amazing music around you. Bring a blanket and a picnic and enjoy the show from the Great Lawn, or sit in the stadium seating that the pavilion provides.

Local bars and restaurants

If you’re a foodie and a music fan, Chicago is the best place to enjoy delicious dishes while listening to entrancing music. Bars and restaurants throughout the city feature local musicians all during the year. If you’re looking to spend the evening in an atmosphere that will take you back in time, you can visit one of Al Capone’s favorite dives on Broadway Street. The Green Mill features jazz music and has kept the old school charm that will transport you back to the time of booze-smuggling.Looking for a more intimate music and dining experience? The Empty Bottle is a laid back indie establishment that features soft rock bands in a cozy atmosphere with acoustics that frequents rave about. The Bassment is another great option for a good time, allowing guests to dance or relax on plush couches surrounded by portraits of great artists from all sorts of genres. No matter what kind of music you’re looking for, there’s a joint in Chicago that will allow you to feast and feel the beat at the same time.

Broadway shows

Broadway shows in Chicago are one of the best places you’ll be able to hear live music from, including popular shows like Hamilton, Wicked, and The Lion King. Performing on 5 different stages throughout the city, the shows rotate and allow you to catch a show or two while you’re in town. From the inspiring singers to the talented musicians, the music here is some of the best in the country.

Music festivals

Chicago is known for the music festivals that are hosted throughout the summer. Grant Park holds Lollapalooza every year in August, one of the biggest concerts with multiple stages and some of the top artists in the country. Another country-renowned hip-hop concert is Summer Smash 2023, which brings in visitors from all around the Midwest. For a smaller concert, Taste of Chicago and Taste of Randolph Street feature a couple of smaller but still exciting bands that you can enjoy while taking in the local cuisine. Still more festivals that feature iconic musicians are Picnic in the Park, Riot Fest, and the Windy City Smokeout. There is no shortage of festivals where you can enjoy good food and great music along Lake Michigan in Chicago.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Violin players can rejoice, for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performs in one of the best acoustic venues in the city. While the building's architecture is a marvel in and of itself, the musicians who play in the orchestra are a wonder themselves. They’ve earned 64 Grammy Awards, and play throughout the seasons in the Windy City. Their vast repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary, giving plenty of variety for your enjoyment.

The Morton Arboretum

From late May until August, the Morton Arboretum holds “Arbor Evenings” in the park for a family friendly music option. Attendees play lawn games, relax in the beautiful landscape, watch the sunsets, and hear a variety of local bands. Food trucks line the street to allow you to create the perfect experience for your listening pleasure. Locals love spending their Wednesday nights in nature while listening and supporting rotating local performers.
