Tips for Exploring Chicago in the Spring

Spring, arguably the best season to visit Chicago, is in full swing. While it’s hard to go wrong with just about anything there at this time of year, it’s always nice to go into a trip feeling prepared and confident that you’ll have the experience you’re hoping for. As Windy City locals, we’re here to share our best insider tips for exploring Chicago in the spring. From spring festivals to simply dressing for the weather, here are the things you can do to ensure a successful springtime adventure in our favorite city.
Go to Spring Events and Festivals
Chicago blooms with excitement and lively events in the spring. From April 24-26, check out the One of a Kind Spring Show, where local creators and artisans from around the country sell their handmade goods and unique items. Held in the historic Merchandise Mart, you’ll be able to shop for everything from bath and body products to repurposed furniture, perfect for original spring and summer celebration. Just outside the city, Brookfield Zoo hosts its “Glow Wild” event from March through May, where handcrafted lantern displays, live performances, and curated food offerings create an immersive evening experience unlike any other.
Navy Pier is right in our backyard at Hotel EMC2 and, luckily for us, comes alive in the spring with events. A highlight of the season is EXPO Chicago (April 9–12), featuring more than 170 international galleries alongside citywide exhibitions and programming. Throughout the spring, the Pier continues to host festivals and experiences, complemented by iconic attractions like the Centennial Wheel and scenic boat tours, making it easy to discover something new every time you explore.
Dress for the Weather
Spring in Chicago is anything but predictable. One moment it’s crisp and cool, the next it’s warm and sun-filled. Sometimes, you’ll even experience both in a single afternoon. The key to exploring comfortably? Dressing with intention.
Start with light, breathable layers you can easily add or remove as temperatures shift throughout the day. A versatile jacket, comfortable walking shoes, and a compact umbrella can make all the difference when the forecast decides to surprise you. Think of it as preparing for variables, because in Chicago, flexibility isn’t just helpful, it’s essential.
A quick check of the weather before heading out is always a smart move, but the real secret is being ready for anything. With the right approach, you won’t just handle Chicago’s spring, you’ll move through it effortlessly.
Master the Indoor-Outdoor Balance
Since the weather can be so unpredictable in the spring in Chicago, the best way to explore the city isn’t choosing between indoors or outdoors, but learning how to seamlessly move between both. Plan your day with flexibility in mind, starting with open-air moments like a walk along the Chicago Riverwalk or exploring a nearby neighborhood.
When the weather shifts, step inside to reset and recharge. At Hotel EMC2, the experience continues beyond your room, especially with the patio reopening for the season, offering a relaxed, open-air space to unwind and take in the spring atmosphere. It’s the perfect in-between moment before heading back out into the city. Cultural spaces like the Art Institute of Chicago offer another kind of pause, inviting you to slow down while staying immersed in Chicago’s creative energy. By blending outdoor exploration with intentional indoor stops, you create a rhythm that keeps your day comfortable, balanced, and effortlessly engaging.
Embrace Spring Dining
As temperatures begin to rise, Chicago comes alive with one of its most anticipated seasonal shifts to patio dining. Places like our in-house restaurant the Albert are preparing for guests to enjoy unique dishes sunshine simultaneously. Sidewalk cafés, rooftop terraces, and riverfront restaurants reopen, which create the perfect setting to soak in the fresh air while enjoying the city’s vibrant food scene.
Nowhere captures this energy quite like the Chicago Riverwalk, where a collection of restaurants and bars line the water, offering an effortlessly scenic backdrop for spring dining. It’s the ideal place to slow down, people-watch, and take in the city from a more relaxed, open-air perspective.
Spring also brings a shift in flavor. Menus lighten up with fresh, seasonal ingredients, making it the ideal time for brunch dates, afternoon coffee stops, and leisurely dinners that stretch into golden hour. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite between exploring or settling in for a longer meal, embracing the season’s energy through food is one of the simplest and most enjoyable ways to experience the city.
