For the Hiker: Chicago Lakefront Trail
If long walks along the beach are your thing, Chicago is the place to deliver. The Chicago lakefront trail extends 18 miles, snaking right along the lakeâs edge. With great views of skyscrapers on one side and the crashing waves of endless water on the other, itâs an experience you wonât get anywhere else. During the trek, pedestrians pass by beaches, parks, and restaurants, perfect for a quick rest stop or to detour and spend the day. While it may be a heavily trafficked area, youâll quickly see why. The Midwest is known for its carp, and Chicago isnât any different. A visit to the riverwalk is sure to bring views of fishermen and women enjoying a drink from one of the local bars while they cast a pole in the water. There are also over 70 species of other fish to catch, particularly if you scout out pockets of stiller water. Slower casts are more successful here, and if youâre looking to try your luck elsewhere, there are also plenty of harbors and lagoons to check out as well.

Whether youâre a seasoned watersports expert or a tourist looking to try something new, Chicago has great opportunities for kayaking. With architecture and history tours taking place on the water, you can join a group to get out on the water and see more of the city. There are rentals ready for your adventure, or you can also launch your own craft and set out to explore where you wish. The river provides 156 miles to paddle, running straight through the heart of the city. This is a fun and unique way to see the city while enjoying the water that breathes life into downtown.
